Spirit week, the week where self expression is encouraged in school and a time where students can have fun. This spirit week in GIS was the first one we’ve had ever since Covid-19 and I absolutely enjoyed it. Seeing all my friends dressed up and having fun in their outfits while also being comfortable and excited about what they’re wearing was really heartwarming. When you first enter GIS through the gates you see all the different grade students dressed up in bright colors and it personally made me look forward to my day even more.

There were the same themes for the whole school. The themes were ‘Squad Sunday’, Character day on Monday, Athleisure wear on Tuesday, Decades day on Wednesday and The switcharoo on Thursday! These were so fun to do and so exciting to see. On Sunday, there were so many unique groups that I saw, there was a group dressed up as the iconic thieves from ‘Money Heist’, Mr. Rooney and a few other students from my grade dressed up in hawaiian shirts, I dressed up as the Dwayne Johnson meme, and another group wore matching jackets! It was so fun to see the uniqueness and creativity of the different costumes.

Moving on to Monday which was Character Day, this one was the most exciting one for me as there were so many references to movies, tv shows and animes that were so good and also so on point! I personally was so excited to dress up as Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle and had loads of fun putting my outfit together, some of the students that I noticed were dressed up as Captain America, characters from squid game, the power puff girls, luffy and law from one piece, Joe Goldberg from the famous Netflix show “You”, I think I also saw James bond, and people dressed up as footballers and basketballers as well. It was super exciting and I even got ask a few people what they thought about spirit week, and they all had one thing in common, “It’s a great time for the students to relax and express themselves.” And honestly it couldn’t have been said any better.

Tuesday was athleisure wear and I think everyone took this day as a break from all the dressing up because I certainly did! Students came in their comfortable but sporty clothes and it was a very enjoyable day. A great time to just wind down.

On Wednesday, which was Decades day, students got to dress up as people from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s or even the future! I saw a lot of leather jackets and lots of students with bright colors and some funky patterns, lots of students dressed as hippies and lots of bold colors as well as old traditional clothes. It was very exciting to see new ways Decades Day was represented and it was really fun, especially when you’re anticipating what everyone’s going to wear.

Thursday was the great Switcharoo there were lots of students who were excited to dress up and were especially looking forward to this theme, students came in formal wear and dressed up all kinds of teachers of different professions, which was definitely exciting to see and especially when you question who they were dressed up as.

Spirit Week was definitely the most fun I’ve had in a while in school, since we got to express ourselves and dress in whatever we wanted to, I think this was a great event to have especially during these hard times, and was very fun to see!
