World leaders rekindle discussions to combat the climate change impact and widening gap at the 2022 UN. climate summit held at Sharm Al-Sheikh, Egypt. "Nearly 200 nations attended the two-week climate change conference and set the ground for annual discussions about the future of global actions." The 30th anniversary of the world coming together at the COP 27 summit highlighted global cooperation on sustainable concepts such as Food Security, Innovative Financing, Investment in future energy solutions, Water Security and Sustainability of Vulnerable Communities.
UAE’s Etihad Airways set a groundbreaking example to show its commitment towards the 13th UN Sustainable Development goal by operating the world’s first net-zero emissions flight to COP 27. Etihad is now the first Commercial airline to take part in the world energy service for climate leaders taking action to achieve net zero goals. With this commitment, UAE will host the next year's COP28 climate summit and raise the bar for innovative solutions that are needed to save our planet.
Amongst the instrumental takeaways of the climate change conference, this year was the agreement to set up a fund for protecting vulnerable communities against climate-driven disasters. This has been the first time that wealthy nations like Germany, Austria, the United States and others have voted to set up a hundred-million-dollar fund to help provide payouts to developing countries that suffer from climate-driven storms, floods, droughts, etc. This revolutionary step will carve out new policies of how the fund will be allocated and provide the much-needed shield to cope with escalating natural disasters and rising sea level dangers each year.
Another critical event that acknowledged a renewed focus on energy this year was the collaboration of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters: US and China, to combat the impact of climate change. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused disruption in meeting the energy demands and initiated the search for non-Russian gas alternatives. President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates announced that his country would continue to deliver oil and gas "for as long as the world is in need".
The summit also marked the return of another Brazil to the global cooperation mission on climate change. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared "Brazil is back" in the global climate fight, and vowed to host COP30 in 2025 in the Amazon region.
The annual UN conference on climate change in Egypt has truly showcased unity
against an existential threat that the world is determined to fight back against through global collaboration and effective implementation. It shows our superheroes are not going to leave any stone unturned to reduce the widening gap in meeting the 2030 UN Sustainable Global Goals.
