Student Wellness: /noun/ a sustainable state of positive mood and attitude, resilience, and satisfaction with self, relationships, and experiences at school.

The Student Life committee is excited to announce that we are collaborating with the sports committee to bring the first annual wellness day to the GIS community. Student wellness in an incredibly important part of our goals in student life as a large part of our mission as a committee is to ease stress in students and aid them in achieving a fulfilling and balanced school life. GIS counsellors are always available to students who may need them at school as well as well trained, compassionate teachers who know how important the quality of life of their students is. Whilst the facilities at GIS regarding student wellbeing are great the student life committee believes more can always be done to ensure the comfort of the students within it and will be aiming to create a safer, more enjoyable and less stressful environment at GIS. We believe that the benefits of student wellness are too many to list however some of these benefits include but are not limited to creating a more comfortable environment at school, allowing students to pursue their hobbies, interests and passions as well as an increase in academic performance, physical health of students, healthier eating habits and the list go on and on. One of the greatest parts of student wellness is that while the school itself can do much to ensure a high standard of student wellbeing, every student can improve their wellbeing through some of the following into their routine.

Communicate with your teachers!

If you’re unable to meet a deadline make sure you tell your teachers ahead of time, teachers don't know what assessments you might have on any given day so it's important to let them know.

Exercise regularly!

Physical fitness has been shown to improve confidence, helps you concentrate, makes you feel more energetic and even improve memory as well as many other benefits

Spend time with your friends and family!

Many students ignore their social lives instead choosing to spend that time working however spending time with your loved ones will improve your mood and make you more productive later.

Follow your passions and hobbies!

Developing skills will make you feel more fulfilled and allows you to do things important to you. It could be playing a sport, playing an instrument, baking, photography, writing or anything really. It's important to have goals outside of your academics!

Make sure you get enough sleep and rest!

You'll need to work a lot harder and a lot longer if you don't have enough sleep but that's also true if you don't take short breaks while studying, at least one break every 90 minutes of study will improve your wellbeing by a lot. Activities to do in your break include: taking a walk, stretching, taking a quick shower or even tidying your room. Just make sure to leave social media and napping for after you’re done working!

Make sure you take care of yourself, taking these short steps to improve your day to day will make you feel much better and you may even graduate from school not only with great grades but great time management skills that will be useful no matter where you go.

Wellness day will consist of multiple wellness-themed activities such as a message from both our school counselor Ms. Malin and a professional wellness speaker from outside of school, a yoga session that you can participate in from anywhere, school (limited spaces), home, your garden etc, a mural that helps provide a dose of wellness to the school community and finally instagram posts that will help you keep wellness in mind throughout the year or your school career. Student wellbeing is really important when it comes to school and outside of school activities. This will all take place on december 8th.

We understand that the past few months have been difficult. Our current struggles are unique to this period, which makes it even more important for us to find new and adaptive ways to take care of ourselves, in and out of school.
