Introduction:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go!”
These words were once said by the world-famous children’s author, Dr. Seuss, and what he said was absolutely true! Over the last week, the students of GIS learned more about the world of literature than you can imagine, through various different and fun activities.
Starting with the primary years programme, the students learned invaluable lessons on why you should not judge others solely based on their outside appearances, by reading “The Gruffalo”, an all-time children’s classic. This story was read to them by a number of helpful volunteers who took time away from their
normal school lessons, just to be of help and educate the younger students.
The students of grades three and four learned about the wondrous Dr. Seuss himself, as they engaged in the Dr. Seuss workshop that the volunteers had brought to them. They learned about him and his books as well as participated in a lively activity where they got to decorate their own, unique and wacky Dr. Seuss hats That truly unified everyone in celebration of Lit Week.
The Students of grade five also learned about the pleasures of reading. They gained a better understanding of how reading can be useful by helping them increase their knowledge of the world and by heightening their creative and imaginative juices. They learned how to choose the right books for themselves and also got to take part in a really creative activity where they made their very own bookmarks.
But of course, the students of PYP weren’t the only ones who had fun during Lit Week. The students of the MYP grades got to learn about and develop profound appreciation of poetry. They learned about poetic structures, poets through the ages, poems of different cultures, and let's not forget, one of the many building blocks of the writing world which are figurative devices. The students also got to take part in a thrilling poetry competition where each grade got accompaniment from professional writers.
The amazing week was only made possible through the help of our amazing organizers, Ezra D’souza and Fatima Imran, and with the guidance of Ms. Terri. If it weren’t for them, Lit Week would not have been such a joyous week of our school year for us to enjoy. The week also would not have been half as fun and educational if it weren’t for the numerous, wonderful volunteers who took their time to help out.
Please give your thanks to them if you ever have the opportunity to meet them in the hallways. When we do this again next year, be sure to consider participating in the various activities and give it your all. Afterall, like Dr. Seuss said, “Think left and
think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if you only try!”
