Hey there! My name is Saachi Varghese and I am a student at GIS. One of my favorite things about this school is the extracurricular activities and the various opportunities we have been given. I am involved in a lot of different extracurricular activities this school year since GIS has offered a lot of new opportunities. Let's go through a few of them, as well as opinions from people who host these extracurriculars!
World Scholar’s Cup
The World Scholar’s Cup is a two day competition that includes four different events. The best part of the Scholar’s Cup was forming a bond with your school team. It includes exciting debates, fun collaborative writing, intense scholars’ bowl and of course the dreadful scholar’s challenge. This year, our school got more than 80 MEDALS! Not to mention the fact that we were against OVER 700 students with 200 teams. The hosts made the event a blast because of the interesting stories we were told including a conversation about the troubles of travelling with an alpaca. After the event we were given alpacas, yes I know that sounds crazy! The World Scholar’s Cup is an experience that I will never forget! Hopefully I can see some of you there next year!
Sports Squads (U19 & U16 boys and girls)
GIS offers a variety of sports programmes to join. My favorite thing about the sports squads is the variety of options. Our school has recently increased the amount of sports offered to us such as badminton and volleyball. The most popular squads are the basketball and football teams. There are age groups for both of the squads since different ages have different strengths and weaknesses. These students spend their free time after school training for interschool matches against various school such as Dubai International Academy and Kings Al barsha. All students have different strengths and weaknesses, not all students excel in academic therefore the sports teams help include those students as well as make them feel more at home in GIS.
StuELT Committees (Academic, Social, Service, House, Sports, Student Life)
The Student ELT stands for Executive Leadership Team. It is an effective and fun way to achieve new goals for the school. There are a total of six committees; the academic committee where we improve various aspects of the academics in GIS, the social committee that allows you to give ideas about social events, the service committee that allows you to be a part of giving back to our community, the house committee that improves the house system at GIS, the sports committee which allows you to help the athletes at GIS reach their highest potential, and of course, the student life committee that helps us prioritize our students’ mental health. I am part of the StuLife committee, which I enjoy a lot and encourage you to join! We have team meetings every week where we exchange new ideas and discuss the projects we are working on.
